What started as an overcast grey day, turned into a bright, sunny and warm lunch. Not only did the weather perk up but Adele Nozedar (author of many award winning books, among them The Hedgerow Handbook and The Garden Forager) had invited us to a Lunch Time Taster of her foraging hedgerow walks.
Unfortunately the office was busy so we missed the actual foraging and walking part of the morning but we arrived just in time to be able to join the others to enjoy some of “the bounty of their walk”.
Many of the ingredients were sourced within 1 mile of Adele’s home, and thus the name of this lunch time menu was “1000 Steps”. Adele’s new home is situated in the picturesque village of Llanfrynach in the heart of the Brecon Beacons. We passed the two neighbouring cottages – Myrtle and Mary’s, The Old Workshop and Ty Bychan in this pretty village with the village pub called The White Swan.
We were amazed at the vast variety of dishes that Adele and her partner Liam had created for us. Everything was delicious and colourful with some really usual flavours.
On arrival we were greeted with a glass of freshly pressed sparkling elderflower cordial, then we were offered an extraordinary array of various of salads, wilted herb salad with lilac wine vinaigrette, rainbow chard with rocket and sweet basil from the garden, garden pak choi and baby broccoli fatayer with fennel plume and Discovery Apple chutney; and so it went on a lovely Urui with salsa verde, walnut pesto, ox eye daisy tabbouleh, focaccia bread with ramsons seeds and home-grown chilli, pickled fennel, oak leaf roasted new potatoes and much more.
It was quite astounding and I have to say I think everyone of us there ate everything and wanted more. Then to follow we had the most delicious ice cream I have ever had – and I know about ice creams! It was wild baker’s honey ice cream with rose petals and sour river blackberry ice cream ………… then an elderflower drizzle cake – we all pretended we could not possibly fit it in – but we did.
Following that there was wild raspberry schnapps – quite amazing – Oh maybe I forgot to mention the Drunk Chicken of the Woods – a tree fungi lightly poached in white wine served with lemon balm!
Adele talked us through each dish and the ingredients as well as explaining her passion for the countryside and foraging but by that time we were all hooked and could see we could half our grocery bills – but no-one could have prepared the food so well as Adele and Liam (the true chef) – who spent the whole time hiding in the kitchen.
We had to get back to the office, but Adele sent us away with some mushroom pies for the girls at Brecon Beacons Holiday Cottages (which quickly disappeared) she was most definitely “ the hostess with the mostess” to-day.
On the drive back to the office, we drove slowly looking in the hedges and think what’s for dinner!
