On The Map: Black Mountains Smokery

Our regular On The Map feature is now well and truly underway. So far, we’ve had the pleasure of sharing insights from hotels, activity providers, cafe’s and more! This week we had a chat with the good people over at Black Mountains Smokery.

We talked about how to spend a rainy day in Wales, tips for starting your own business and what they have in store for 2016.

1: Tell us about your business

We are a family run business, established 20 years ago, producing a delicious range of traditionally cured and oak smoked salmon, fish, meats and cheese.  Our fresh supplies are carefully UK sourced with welfare in mind and processed by hand at our smokery in Crickhowell.  We also offer a great selection of gourmet smoked food gifts and hampers incorporating other wonderful local produce from £40 – £400.  Our online & mail order business delivers our award winning smoked foods and  hampers UK wide year round to arrive on your day of choice.  Our smokery shop showcases what we do and is a great place to stop to pick up holiday treats, easy meals and foodie souvenirs.

2: What is your favourite Brecon Beacons Holiday Cottage?

Dyffryn Beusych. It’s just down the road from where we live with the most fabulous view of Sugarloaf – especially in August when the heather is flowering.

3: It’s a rainy day in Wales – how do you spend it?

We are usually out in our garden, with our horses and dogs or walking, whatever the weather – and Jonathan loves to fish. There is nothing like getting weather beaten in the Black Mountains – luckily our young continue to come home with gangs of friends to enjoy the mountains whatever the weather!

4: What’s your top tip for running a business?

Offer a consistently excellent product that you are proud of, with a friendly reliable service.

5: What’s in store for your business in 2016?

2016 sees us really enjoying the extra space we moved into last year with a larger shop and easier access and parking.  We have introduced a Wednesday Weekly Smokery Tour and Tasting from March – October.  £12 per person and booking is essential as we can still only accommodate small numbers at a time.

Looking to the future we are reviewing our packaging in the hope that it will say a little more about us – the produce we are so proud and the old fashioned service we offer.

Black Mountains Smokery is featured on our exclusive discount map. Guests of Brecon Beacons Holiday Cottages will receive 20% off (min £35 – not available on mail order).
