Photographer’s Insight

Recently we were shooting near the beautiful little town of Crickhowell which hosts the Green Man music festival every Year on the Glanusk Estate. Near to here is one of our cottages called Hollyfield. I was lucky enough to have our longtime professional photographer and friend of Liz Daniel’s, Paul Campbell as MY assistant for the day. Usually it’s the other way around!
Paul’s insight into the “perfect veg” is comical, but very true; he has a good eye for a shiny, juicy plump tomato or a bunch of green, leafy carrots. And it was pretty helpful having his input for composition and lighting as well.

Hollyfield was probably one of my favorite cottages to shoot so far as I love the area of Crickhowell, it was near where I grew up. The cottage is located in the grounds of a large country manor house where I used to visit when a friend of ours used to live there. Guests staying there can use the tennis courts, the large expansive garden and pick your own fruit and veg from the walled garden as well as only being a short walk from the river and the mountains all around you. It really is a beautiful relaxing place with great views on to the private garden through large insulated windows. The place was really warm already and the wood burner had only been lit a couple of times before we did for the shoot making it sweltering. It is an incredible space for a couple to relax.

It is often quite hard to capture the beautiful surroundings and views when visiting properties like Hollyfield. Another property I shot recently with my assistant Tom in tow was Lower Allt Y Brain. Situated on a hill north of Brecon town this property has amazing views across the valley and a veranda outside the living room that captures these views. From every window there is a new outlook and the sun comes streaming in, which proved hard to shoot on such a sunny day, but I think we did a good job.
