The Beacons’ must-see events in 2013

So the Brecon Beacons might well be home to some very popular festivals and events (we’re thinking Hay Literature, Brecon Jazz etc), but it also hosts countless other events that, while they may not be as well known, are still fantastic fun!

Talybont-on-Usk Village Show – Talybont on Usk Village Show is an annual event that focuses on local produce, crafts and, most importantly, fun for the entire family. Flowers, fruit and veg, cooking classes, crafts, children’s arts and crafts, sports and some fantastic attractions all make up a day of fun and enjoyment for all. Make sure you come along with the family and have a fantastic time in Talybont-on-Usk! http://www.breconbeaconstourism.co.uk/events/item/68152/Talybont_on_Usk_Show_.html

P1000778Bwlch with Altitude Challenge – An energetic 12-mile circular walk that involves climbing two hills (that’s the altitude bit), starting and ending at Bwlch’s cosy pub, the New Inn. The challenge bit means answering questions posted along the route and maybe winning £100 for a charity of your choosing. You’ll also get to enjoy a hard-earned hot dog and chips once you’re done walking, as well as stunning views of the surrounding Beacons throughout. http://www.bwlchwalks.co.uk/                                                                           Cottages near: Winnies Hayloft, Dragons Cottage, Tower House, Cathedine Old Coach House, Cilwych Cottages, Talybryn House

Wild Garlic festival – Everyone loves garlic, which is exactly why the Wild Garlic Festival has proven so popular since it began on 2011. Taking place on the 13th and 14th of April near Abergavenny, you’ll get to forage for your own wild garlic in a 50-acre woodland and learn some neat recipes from Franco and Ann Tarushio, formerly of the Michelin-starred The Walnut Tree. http://www.festivalsinmonmouthshire.co.uk/events/item/70900/Wild_Garlic_Festival.html?subcategoryname=culture_and_lifestyle

Brecon County Show – Having been founded way back in 1755, this is the oldest surviving agricultural society in the UK. Held annually on the first weekend of August (it falls on the third this year), you’ll find around 200 trade exhibitors offering up the very best in British farm produce, as well as the latest machinery and cars, clothing,  jewellery and hand made gifts. Couple this with a dog show, rides and a stalls for kids, a beer tent and, of course, the show itself, and you’ve a great family day out.
